Synopsis: In the 5th century, the Roman Empire was collapsing and barbarians threatened civilization. In Britain, a teenager named Patrick was living a comfortable life as the son of a government official. The monasteries were built and there were plenty of vocations to the priesthood and the religious life. The Irish monks became teachers and inventors. This is due initially to the untiring efforts of Saint Patrick and those great missionaries who are, for the most part, forgotten by the Irish of today. Saint Patrick himself is really a gift of God to the Irish people for whom the Irish will be eternally grateful. Saint Patrick died in Armagh in 461AD after 29 years as Archbishop in that Archdiocese which now has the Primacy of all Ireland. The current Archbishop is known as "Primate of all Ireland. " His job would be to chair all meetings of the Irish Episcopal Conferences and to make sure that faith and morals are taught and upheld by both the religious and civil authorities. The remaining relics of Saint Patrick and his gifts to Ireland There exists a very precious relic of Saint Patrick in Northern Ireland, his incorrupt right hand. This sacred and special relic is, unfortunately, kept in the Ulster Museum and not in a dedicated or special place which is open to pilgrims. Saint Patrick's jaw is kept in a parish church in the Diocese of Down and Connor. His grave is beside the Cathedral of Armagh. Hopefully, one day these relics will be gathered together and incorporated into an International Shrine of Saint Patrick, along with all the other materials, such as books on his life, etc., which show his influence on the entire Catholic Church. His name was Victoricus, and he carried many letters, and he gave me one of them. I read the heading: 'The Voice of the Irish. ' As I began the letter, I imagined in that moment that I heard the voice of those very people who were near the wood of Foclut, which is beside the western sea-and they cried out, as with one voice: 'We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us. '" The vision prompted his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained by St. Germanus, the Bishop of Auxerre, whom he had studied under for years, and was later ordained a bishop and sent to take the Gospel to Ireland. Patrick arrived in Slane, Ireland on March 25, 433. There are several legends about what happened next, with the most prominent claiming he met the chieftan of one of the druid tribes, who tried to kill him. After an intervention from God, Patrick was able to convert the chieftain and preach the Gospel throughout Ireland. There, he converted many people -eventually thousands - and he began building churches across the country. He often used shamrocks to explain the Holy Trinity and entire kingdoms were eventually converted to Christianity after hearing Patrick's message. Patrick preached and converted all of Ireland for 40 years. He worked many miracles and wrote of his love for God in Confessions. After years of living in poverty, traveling and enduring much suffering he died March 17, 461. He died at Saul, where he had built the first Irish church. He is believed to be buried in Down Cathedral, Downpatrick. His grave was marked in 1990 with a granite stone. In His Footsteps: Patrick was a humble, pious, gentle man, whose love and total devotion to and trust in God should be a shining example to each of us. So complete was his trust in God, and of the importance of his mission, he feared nothing -not even death. But do many people know the real Patrick? Most folks think of him as Irish and a Catholic saint that drove the snakes out of Ireland. But facts show a very different Patrick. The Celtic Christian movement Patrick ignited not only spread from Ireland to Scotland, but beyond. According to Dr. Robert Heidler, Senior Teacher at Glory of Zion International Ministries, the Celtic church was in fact, the last surviving outpost of the first century, apostolic church that operated in signs, wonders and miracles. Christs original, apostolic church operated in miraculous displays of His power in healings, demonic deliverances and raising the dead. According to historian Kenneth Scott Latourette, these miracles were the reason for the early churchs growth. This church continued to operate in such power until the 4th century when the Roman emperor Constantine forced her to compromise with paganism, and the early church in effect died. But not quite in Ireland. Patrick was born in Roman Britain in the late 4th century, and was raised by Christian parents. But Patrick was a prodigal son that didnt follow Jesus. At age 16, he was captured by raiders and sold into slavery in Ireland. He spent his teen years as a shepherd on the hillsides, and there he turned to God. He told how he prayed to God day and night, and the ��love of God and His fear increased more and more. �� Finally, God spoke to Patrick prophetically to return home, and escaping his captors, he found a ship. Back home, he diligently studied the Bible until God told him to return to Ireland to bring it to Christ. And in 30 years, Patrick brought Ireland to Christ, overcoming intense persecution and opposition by rulers and pagan Druid priests. And like the first apostles, he ministered many miracles including healing and raising the dead. According to one report Patrick not only delivered many people from physical and mental illnesses, but ��33 dead men did �� revive from the dead. �� In one account, pagan King Alphimus was deeply grieved by the death of both his son and daughter. The king promised Patrick that if he would raise his children from the dead that ��he, his nobles and the whole city would be baptized into this new faith. �� Patrick then resurrected the two. Patricks faith and Celtic Christianity were quite different from the Catholic Church. They didnt believe in purgatory, honor the Pope, or pray to Mary. Priests and monks married and had children. Only believers were baptized, and that by immersion. They celebrated Christian Passover, not the pagan Roman Easter, and they observed the Sabbath. According to Heidler, they evidenced more the roots of the Eastern church and Messianic-Jewish influence. And where did this Jewish influence come from? According to the Book of Leinster, compiled from some of the oldest Irish sources, Patrick truly was ��one of the Sons of Israel. �� His ancestors, Messianic-Jews who had become followers of Jesus, had fled the sacking of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 A. Upon Patrick's escape from his approximately six years of slavery, he went back to Britain, and then to Gaul where he studied under St. Germain, bishop of Auxerre, for 12 years before returning again to Britain. There he felt a calling to return as a missionary to Ireland. He stayed in Ireland for another 30 years, converting, baptizing, and setting up monasteries. Various legends have grown up concerning St. Patrick, the most popular of the Irish saints. Patrick was not well-educated, a fact he attributes to early captivity. Due to this, it was with some reluctance that he was sent as a missionary to Ireland, and only after the first missionary, Palladius, had died. Perhaps it's because of his informal schooling in the meadows with his sheep that he came up with the clever analogy between the three leaves of the shamrock and the Holy Trinity. At any rate, this lesson is one explanation for why St. Patrick is associated with a shamrock. Patrick is also credited with driving the snakes out of Ireland. There were probably no snakes in Ireland for him to drive out, and it is very likely that the story was meant to be symbolic. Since he converted the heathen, the snakes are thought to stand for the pagan beliefs or evil. Where he was buried is a mystery. Among other places, a chapel to St. Patrick at Glastonbury claims he was interred there. A shrine in County Down, Ireland, claims to possess a jawbone of the saint which is requested for childbirth, epileptic fits, and to avert the evil eye. While we don't know exactly when he was born or died, this Roman British saint is honored by the Irish, especially in the United States, on March 17 with parades, green beer, cabbage, corned beef, and general revelry.
